Treatment to hair loss

The number of people experiencing hair loss is increasing by the day. Treatment to hair loss is not always cheap and it is difficult to find one best treatment to hair loss that satisfies everyone. Finasteride is a medicine that is taken orally by men usually in doses of 1mg per day. The male hormone Dihydrotestosterone or DHT is considered to be responsible for most hair loss. This hormone shrinks the hair follicle finally causing the hair to fall off. Finasteride reduces the amount of hormone produced in the body preventing hair loss.

Saw palmetto, a palm plant found in North America inhibits DHT production. It is therefore an herbal treatment to hair loss. Unlike Finasteride, it has no side effects and also does not affect other organs of the body. Both finasteride and saw palmetto can be bought over the counter in most pharmacies. Aloe vera is another herbal treatment for hair loss as it contains superoxide dismutane which causes formation of nitric oxide thus stimulating hair growth. The aloe vera should be massaged into the scalp and hair very night.

Another drug treatment for hair loss is Minoxidil. It is usually in lotion form and is massaged into the scalp twice daily. It works by increasing the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the scalp thus stimulating the hair follicle. This drug unlike Finasteride can be used by both men and women. Hair growth normally appears after about 4 months of continuous use.

Surgical treatments for hair loss also exist. Hair transplant surgery is the most common of the hair restoration surgeries. Hair is usually taken form the back of the head and moved to the balding areas. The hair continues to grow in the bald area due to the concept of donor dominance. For one to be a suitable candidate of hair transplantation, they have to have sufficient donor hair which can be transplanted to the balding area. Currently, single hair, micro and mini grafts are available. Single hair grafts usually produce the best results after surgery. Micro grafts usually contain 2-3 hairs while mini grafts have 4 or more hairs. Hair transplantation surgery has some side effects including swelling, scab formation and pain after the anesthesia wears off.
